There's a mentality that you should strive to have a life outside work by working set hours and having boundaries. Deep work is the defaultAt work, Norwegians are working, and deep work is expected of everyone. I've set up my notification systems so that only important things come through outside work hours. Talking of work outside work is not taboo, but you don't want to be the guy who can't shut up about work. You get used to this dynamic where time is precious and hate it when someone's late outside work.

She shared her strategy for acing job interviews, which includes having five key questions ready. She recently posted a TikTok about five questions she has ready for a job interview. Lindstrom says she believes asking at least some of these questions is why she's always landed a role she interviewed for. I really drove home that it doesn't stop at 5 p.m. My job stops when my job is done. I wanted my audience to know that asking about it is so important because if you're miserable in your job, you're only setting yourself up to fail.

But that's not how my life turned out. When I actually turned 40, I was reeling from the humiliation of two short marriages followed by divorce, no kids, and two ill-fated endings. I had a therapist, a dating coach, a yoga membership, and a routine cry on my best friend's couch, obsessing over what went wrong … again. When I went out with someone on a fabulous first date, I'd make myself wait a week for the next one. A growing group of America's young people are not in school, not working, or not looking for work. They're called "disconnected youth" or "opportunity youth," and their ranks have been growing for nearly three decades. Experts say it's not just work and school; this group is often also disconnected from a sense of purpose. Palmer added that those with limited access to transportation, people with disabilities, and young parents were also more susceptible. Disconnected young people don't have that luxury."

Street safety advocates say fire officials' focus on speed is making roads more dangerous. Many of the city's residents want to take action to make their streets safer. In March, LA voted overwhelmingly for a street safety policy that will finally enforce a nearly decade-old mobility plan to make the city's streets safer for non-drivers. Fire departments across the country have for decades opposed safer street design. He said fire departments can be convinced to support safer street design if they're heavily engaged by planners.

That's because most of the past several weeks have shown that first-time claims for unemployment benefits haven't fluctuated at all — as in zero. "Initial claims for unemployment insurance are state programs, with 50 state rules, hundreds of offices, and 50 websites to file. Weather, seasonality, holidays, and economic vibrations drive the number of people filing claims from week to week," he added. Indeed, a Labor Department spokesperson noted that while the string of 212,000 prints on the jobless claims data is "uncommon," it would not be considered anomalous. The Labor Department official also pointed out that new seasonal factors to the claims data were announced a month ago.

But there's good news: You can get noticed without attending every social event, says Stanford University lecturer and communication expert Matt Abrahams. The key is intentionally engaging specific people around you — your "audience," as Abrahams calls them. "The biggest mistake people make in their communication is they don't focus on the needs of the audience," Abrahams tells CNBC Make It. You have three basic methods at your disposal for figuring out what's important to your audience, he notes: reconnaissance, reflection and research. "That's the only way to make [your work] relevant," says Abrahams.

"We realized we couldn't afford the mortgage and the car payments and everything," Stonestreet told me. Americans work more, vacation less, spend more on healthcare, and die sooner than people in other high-income economies. These factors likely explain why some Americans are moving to countries that aren't generally considered low-cost-of-living locales.
